I have been using Visual Web Developer 2008 lately for a project and I have been deceived by the "targeting" that can be done in Visual Studio. Specifically in regards to loading new items in the toolbox.
In the case of the Ajax Control Toolkit, you cannot load the version for 2.0 framework into the IDE. It will throw an error telling you it could not load the .dll.
You have to download the version for 3.5 - even if you are targeting the 2.0 framework.
Then I couldn't get the controls to show up in the toolbox. I tried several blog posts from Microsoft, but in the end, I went to the 3.5 framework as the target and VIOLA - everything works like it should. Now I just hope my project team will consent to going for 3.5 framework. If not - I'm back to Visual Web Developer 2005.
